Friday April 15: Making Pawno: An Independent Love Letter to Footscray

A genre-hybrid of Thriller/Romance/Gangster-Grit Pawno is a quirky character study with an eclectic ensemble cast that has been described as 'quintessentially Australian', 'Unforgettable' and 'Nothing less than perfect'.

Best known as actors, first-time feature director Paul Ireland and screenwriter Damian Hill independently developed and co-produced their debut feature which depicts a side of Melbourne's Barkly Street in Footscray, seldom seen on screen. Diversity is ever-present in the film which is an authentic representation of Australian urban life on screen with a cast that includes: Aboriginal, Indian, African and Vietnamese actors and principal characters who are homeless and transgender.

Premiering at the 2015 Melbourne International Film Festival, where it was the fastest selling Australian film, Pawno generated both critical and 'people's choice' attention and then went on to successfully tour the international festival circuit including; A-List Black Nights Festival in Tallinn, Estonia (where it picked up awards and screened to sell-out crowds), the Singapore Film Festival and Cinefest Oz. The film releases theatrically on April 21.

Host James Hewison will unpack the setting and structure for this quintessentially Melbourne film, with screenwriter/co-producer and actor Damian Hill, delving into influences, intentions as well as the transition from actor to filmmaker.

Guest: Damian Hill
